EDUCATION AND CULTURE

.... And God cares for all and He knows all things. He grants wisdom to whom He pleases; and He to whom wisdom is granted receives indeed a benefit overflowing; but none will grasp the Message but men of understanding.

Sura: 2, Ayat: 268-269.

(Know that) Exalted be Allah, the King, the Truth. Do not be quick with the Quran before its revelation is completed, but rather say: 'Lord, increase my knowledge'.

Sura: 20, Ayat: 114.

And such are the Parables We set forth for mankind, but only those understand them who have knowledge.

Sura: 29, Ayat: 43.

.... From among His servants, it is the learned who fear Allah. Allah is Mighty and Forgiving.

Sura: 35, Ayat: 28.

(Do you deem yourself equal to) one who worships devoutly during the hours of the night prostrating himself or standing (in adoration), who takes heed of the Hereafter, and who places his hope in the Mercy of his Lord-?
Say: 'Are those equal, those who know and those who do not know? It is those who are endued with understanding that receive admonition.

Sura: 39, Ayat: 9.

(God) Most Gracious! It is He Who has taught Quran. He has created man:
He has taught him speech (and Intelligence).

Sura: 55, Ayat: 1-4.

0 you who believe! When you are told to make room in the assemblies (spread out and) make room: (Ample) room will God provide for you. And when you are told to rise up, rise up: God will raise up, to (suitable) ranks (and degrees), those of you who believe and who have been granted (true) Knowledge. And God is well-acquainted with all you do.

Sura: 58, Ayat: 11.

Nun. By the Pen and by the (Record) which (men) write, you are not, by the grace of your Lord, mad or possessed.

Sura: 68, Ayat: 1-2.

Proclaim! (or Read!) in the name of your Lord and Cherisher, Who created - created man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood: proclaim and your Lord is Most Bountiful, - He Who taught (man) the use of the Pen, -taught man that which he knew not.

Sura: 96, Ayat: 1-5.

WISDOM

.... Do not treat God's Signs as a jest, but solemnly rehearse God's favours on you, and the fact that He sent down to you the Book and Wisdom, for your instruction. And fear God, and know that God is well acquainted with all things.

Sura: 2, Ayat: 231.

.... And God cares for all and He knows all things.
He grants wisdom to whom He pleases; and he to whom wisdom is granted receives indeed a benefit overflowing; but none will grasp the Message but men of understanding.

Sura: 2, Ayat: 268-269.

Allah has surely been gracious to the faithful in sending them an apostle from among themselves to declare to them His revelations, to purify them, and to instruct them in the Book and in wisdom, for before that they were in monstrous error.

Sura: 3, Ayat: 164.

But for the Grace of God to you and His Mercy, a party of them would certainly have plotted to lead you astray. But (in fact) they will only lead their own souls astray, and to you they can do no harm in the least. For God has sent down to you the Book and Wisdom and taught you what you knew not (before): and great is the Grace of God upon you.

Sura: 4, Ayat: 113.

Invite (all) to the Way of your Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching;
and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious: for your Lord knows best, who have strayed from His Path, and who receive guidance.

Sura: 16, Ayat: 125.

And recite what is rehearsed to you in your Homes, of the Signs of God and His Wisdom: For God understands the finest mysteries and is well-acquainted (with them).

Sura: 33, Ayat: 34.

PURITY AND CLEANLINESS

They ask you about menstruation. Say: 'It is an indisposition. Keep aloof from women during their menstrual periods and do not touch them until they are clean again. Then have intercourse with them as Allah enjoined you.
Allah loves those that turn to Him in repentance and purify themselves'.

Sura: 2, Ayat: 222.

Believers, do not approach your prayers when you are drunk, but wait till you can grasp the meaning of your words; nor when you are polluted - unless you are travelling the road - until you have washed yourselves. If you are ill or have relieved yourselves or had intercourse with women while travelling and can find no water, take some clean sand or earth and rub your faces and your hands with it. Allah is Pardoning, Forgiving.

Sura: 4, Ayat: 43.

0 you who believe! When you prepare for prayer, wash your faces, and your hands (and arms) to the elbows; and pass your (wet) hands lightly over your head and (wash) your feet to the ankles. If you are in a state of ceremonial impurity, bathe your whole body. But if you are ill, or on a journey or one of you has relieved yourself or you have been in a contact with women, and you find no water, then take for yourselves clean sand or earth, and rub therewith your faces and hands. God does not wish to place you in a difficulty, but to make you clean, and to complete His favour to you, that you may be grateful.

Sura: 5, Ayat: 6.

Say: 'Not equal are things that are bad and things that are good, even though the abundance of the bad may dazzle you; so fear God, 0 you that understand; that (so) you may prosper.'

Sura: 5, Ayat: 100.

.... It is more fitting that you should pray in a mosque founded on piety from the very first. There you shall find men who would keep pure. Allah loves those that purify themselves.

Sura: 9, Ayat: 107-108

.... You shall admonish none but those who fear their Lord though they cannot see Him, and are steadfast in prayer. He that purifies himself has much to gain. To Allah shall all things return.

Sura: 35, Ayat: 18.

Happy shall be the man who purifies himself, who remembers the name of his Lord and prays to Him.

Sura: 87, Ayat: 14-15.

PURE BETTER THAN THE IMPURE

Say: 'Not equal are things that are bad and things that are good, even though the abundance of the had may dazzle you; so fear God, 0 you that understand; that (so) you may prosper.'

FOOD

0 you people! Eat of what is on earth, lawful and good; and do not follow the footsteps of the Evil One, for he is to you a sworn enemy.

Sura: 2, Ayat: 168.

0 believers, eat of the wholesome things with which We have provided you and give thanks to Allah, if it is Him whom you worship.

Sura: 2, Ayat: 172.

He has only forbidden you dead meat, and blood, and the flesh of swine, and that on which any other name has been invoked besides that of God. But if one is forced by necessity, without wilful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits, - then is he guiltless. For God is Oft-Forgiving Most Merciful.

Sura: 2, Ayat: 173.

0 you who believe! Fulfil (all) obligations. Lawful for you (for food) are all four-footed animals, with the exceptions named: but hunt of animals is forbidden while you are in the sacred Precincts or in pilgrim garb: for God does command according to His Will and Plan.

Sura: 5, Ayat: 1.

You are forbidden (to eat) that which dies of itself, blood, and the flesh of swine; also any flesh dedicated to any other than Allah.
You are forbidden the flesh of strangled (animals) and of those beaten or gored to death; of those killed by a fall or mangled by beasts of prey, unless you rind it still alive and slaughter it; also of animals sacrificed on stones (to idols) (You are forbidden) to seek division by the Arrows. That is a vicious practice.
The unbelievers have this day despaired of (vanquishing) your religion. Have no fear of them: fear Me.
This day I have perfected your religion for you and completed My favour to you. I have chosen Islam to be your faith.
But if any is constrained by hunger to eat of what is forbidden, not intending to commit sin, then surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

Sura: 5, Ayat: 3.

They ask you what is lawful to them (as food).
Say: Lawful for you are (all) things good and pure: and what you have taught your trained hunting animals (to catch) in the manner directed to you by God:
Eat what they catch for you, but pronounce the name of God over it: and fear God; for God is swift in taking account.

Sura: 5, Ayat: 4.

This day are (all) things good and pure made lawful unto you. The food of the People of the Book is lawful upon you and yours is lawful upon them. ...

Sura: 5, Ayat: 5.

Believers, do not forbid the wholesome things which Allah has made lawful to you. Do not transgress; Allah does not love the transgressors.

Sura: 5, Ayat: 87.

Eat of the lawful and wholesome things which Allah has given you. Have fear of Allah, in Whom you believe.

Sura: 5, Ayat: 88.

No blame shall be attached to those that have embraced the faith and done good works in regard to any food they may have eaten, so long as they fear Allah and believe in Him and do good works; so long as they fear Allah and believe in Him; and again so long as they fear Allah and do good works. Allah loves the doers of good.

Sura: 5, Ayat: 93.

Lawful to you is the pursuit of water-game and its use for food, for the benefit of yourselves and those who travel; but forbidden is the pursuit of land-game; - in the Sacred Precincts or in pilgrim garb. And fear God, to Whom you shall be gathered back.

Sura: 5, Ayat: 96.

It was not God who instituted (superstitions like those of) a slit-ear, she-camel, or a she-camel let loose for free pasture, or idol sacrifices for twin-births in animals, or stallion-camels freed from work. It is blasphemers who invent a lie against God; but most of them lack wisdom.

Sura: 5, Ayat: 103.

Eat then of such as has been consecrated in the name of Allah, if you truly believe in His revelations.

Sura: 6, Ayat: 118.

And why should you not eat of that on which the name of Allah is mentioned when He has already made plain to you what is forbidden, except when you are constrained?
Many are those that are misled through ignorance by their fancies: but your Lord best knows the transgressors.

Sura: 6, Ayat: 119.

Do not eat of any flesh that has not been consecrated in the name of Allah; for that is sinful.
The devils will inspire their friends to argue with you. If you obey them, you shall indeed become polytheists.

Sura: 6, Ayat: 121.

And thus their associate-gods have induced many polytheists to kill their children so that they may ruin them and confuse them in their faith. But had Allah pleased, they would not have done so. Therefore, leave them to their false inventions.
They say: 'These cattle, and these crops are forbidden. None may eat of them save those whom we permit.' So they assert. And there are other cattle whose backs are forbidden, and others over which they do not pronounce the name of Allah, thus committing a sin against Him. Allah will punish them for their invented lies.
They also say: 'What is in the wombs of these cattle is lawful to our males but not to our wives.' But if it is still-born, they all partake of it. He will punish them for that which they attribute to Him. He is Wise, Knowing.
Lost are those that in their ignorance have wantonly slain their own children and made unlawful what Allah has given them, inventing falsehoods about Allah. They have gone astray and are not guided.

Sura: 6, Ayat: 137-140.

It is He who produces gardens, with trellises and without, and dates, and tilth with produce of all kinds, and olives and pomegranates, similar (in kind) and different (in variety): Eat of their fruit in their season, but render the dues that are proper on the day that the harvest is gathered: But waste not by excess: For God loves not the wasters.

Sura: 6, Ayat: 141.

And of the cattle, some are for carrying burdens and others for slaughter.
Eat of that which Allah has given you and do not walk in the devil's footsteps; he is your sworn enemy.

Sura: 6, Ayat: 142.

Say: 'I find not in the Message received by me by inspiration any (meat) forbidden to be eaten by one who wishes to eat it, unless it be dead meat, or blood poured forth, or the flesh of swine, -for it is an abomination or, what is impious (meat) on which a name has been invoked, other than God's. But (even so), if a person is forced by necessity, without wilful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits, -your Lord is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Sura: 6, Ayat: 145.

0 Children of Adam! Wear your beautiful apparel at every time and place of prayer: eat and drink: but waste not by excess, for God loves not the wasters.

Sura: 7, Ayat: 31.

Say: 'Who has forbidden you to wear the nice clothes or to eat the good things which Allah has bestowed upon His servants?
Say: 'These are for the faithful in the life of this world, (though shared by others); but they shall be theirs alone on the Day of Resurrection.'
Thus We make plain Our revelations to men of understanding.

Sura: 7, Ayat: 32.

It is not fitting for an Apostle that he should have prisoners of war until he has thoroughly subdued the land. You look for the temporal goods of this world; but God looks to the Hereafter: and God is Exalted in Might, Wise.
Had it not been for a previous ordainment from God, a severe penalty would have reached you for the (ransom) that you took.
But (now) enjoy what you took in war, lawful and good: but fear God: for God is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Sura: 8, Ayat: 67-69.

Say: 'See you what things God has sent down to you for sustenance? Yet you hold forbidden some things thereof and (some things,) lawful.' Say: 'Has God indeed permitted you, or do you invent (things) to attribute to God?'
And what think those who invent lies against God, of the Day of Judgement? Verily God is full of Bounty to mankind, but most of them are ungrateful.

Sura: 10, Ayat: 59-60.

Eat of the good and lawful things which Allah has bestowed on you and give thanks for His favours if you truly serve Him.

Sura: 16, Ayat: 114.

He has only forbidden you dead meat, and blood, and the flesh of swine, and any (food) over which the name of other than God has been invoked. But if one is forced by necessity, without wilful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits, - then God is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Sura: 16, Ayat: 115.

But say not - for any false thing that your tongues may put forth, 'This is lawful, and this is forbidden', so as to ascribe false things to God. For those who ascribe false things to God, will never prosper. (In such falsehood) is but a paltry profit; but they will have a most grievous Penalty.

Sura: 16, Ayat: 116-117.

(Saying): 'Eat of the good things We have provided for your sustenance, but commit no excess therein, lest My Wrath should justly descend on you: and those on whom descends My Wrath do perish indeed!
But he that repents and believes in Me, does good works and follows the right path, shall be forgiven.

Sura: 20, Ayat: 81-82

Apostles! Eat of that which is wholesome and do good works: I have knowledge of all your actions.

Sura: 23, Ayat: 51.

0 Prophet, why do you prohibit that which Allah has made lawful to you.
Do you seek to please your wives?* Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

(*Reference here is either to the Prophet's promise not to eat honey or to his promise to separate from the Coptic Maria.)

Sura: 66, Ayat: 1.

DRESS

It is now lawful for you to lie with your wives on the night of the fast; they are an apparel to you; as you are an apparel to them.....

Sura: 2, Ayat: 187.

0 You Children of Adam! We have bestowed raiment upon you to cover your shame, as well as to be an adornment to you.
But the raiment of righteousness, - that is the best. Such are among the Signs of God, that they may receive admonition!

Sura: 7, Ayat: 26.

Children of Adam! Let the devil not deceive you, as he deceived your parents out of Paradise.
He stripped them of their garments to reveal to them their nakedness. ....

Sura: 7, Ayat: 27.

0 Children of Adam! Wear your beautiful apparel at every time and place of prayer: eat and drink: but waste not by excess, for God loves not the waster.

Sura: 7, Ayat: 31.

Say: 'Who has forbidden you to wear the nice clothes or to eat good things which Allah has bestowed upon His servants?

THE NATION ON THE MIDDLE PATH

.... Say: To God belong both East and West: He guides whom He will to a Way that is straight.
Thus have We made of you an Ummat justly balanced, that you might be witnesses over the nations, and the apostle a witness over yourselves. ...

Sura: 2, Ayat: 142-143

.... Do not treat God's Signs as a jest, but solemnly rehearse God's favours on you, and the fact that He sent down to you the Book and Wisdom, for your instruction. And fear God, and know that God is well acquainted with all things.

MONASTICISM

Then, in their wake, We followed them up with (other of) Our Apostles:
We sent after them Jesus the son of Mary, and bestowed on him the Gospel; and We ordained in the hearts of those who followed him, Compassion and Mercy. But the Monasticism which they invented for themselves, We did not prescribe for them: (We commanded) only the seeking for the good pleasure of God; but that they did not foster as they should have done. Yet We bestowed, on those among them who believed, their (due) reward, but many of them are rebellious transgressors.

Sura: 57, Ayat: 27.
